After World War II, the Jewish architect Laszlo Toth emigrates to the USA to start anew. He lives with his cousin Attila and works in his furniture store. When they get the chance to redesign the library of Harrison Lee Van Buren, Laszlo hopes for success. However, the plan fails, and they are thrown out. Attila blames Laszlo and throws him out on the street, where he falls deeper into his morphine addiction. The dream of bringing his wife Erzsebet over seems lost until Van Buren offers him a major project.
